Northampton Town 2 Charlton Athletic 1

I wasn’t sure what kind of reaction Karl Robinson was looking for after Tuesday night but 1,500 fans screaming “you’re not fit to wear the shirt” might not have been quite it.

It wasn’t that they weren’t trying, because they were, it’s just that as a team they played like strangers. Defensively porous, and other than a few intelligent carry outs by Konsa always it was just a hopeful punt. A midfield wholly unable to find a telling pass and constantly caught in possession.

The two strikers Novak and Magennis playing as if they’d met for the first time before kick off. Chasing long balls and lost causes. Ex-Addick Michael Smith giving our two strikers a lesson in movement, hold up play and finishing.

From our lot only Botaka and Holmes showed any sense of urgency and came out of the game with any credit.

But the most hurtful thing to see was after Northampton scored their second, there was nothing. No response, no desire to give it a go, no desperation not to lose. Nothing. By that time Watt was on blowing wind, Ulvestad looked as if he wanted a big hole to swallow him up and Teixeira stared at a realization that actually playing will diminish his hopes of getting a move because he really isn’t anywhere near as good as he thinks he is.

It was shocking and this football club dear to so many of our hearts is broken and Robinson hasn’t a clue how to stop this runaway train that he is driving.

Dead man walking: “There was loads of fans here trying to support. I understand that people might not like me but I’m the one that should take the criticism.”

Whatever’s going on behind the scenes I think is frustrating the players also – don’t think Antonio Conte could arrest the slide
Don’t know what the answer is but I’m certainly not sensing much unity

  2. I agree with your annalises of this game with a heavy heart. But fortunately you are right. Every player came across as if they have thrown in the towel and resigned themselves to relegation. I’m speachless and very sad.

    • Grumpy – we may differ on our view of the protests and the owner but we are both Charlton fans and want the best for the club and see the team not be world beaters because otherwise we would have chosen to support Man Utd, but just give 100% and play like their lives depended on it.

Yesterday and in recent weeks we have watched a team with maybe a few exceptions that have no interest in the well being of the club. They have relegation etched all over their faces and the manager in between sound bites and pre match tactical masterclasses is looking more and more like a fraud.

That is no fault of the fans, you or me. Or the other 1,500 that were there yesterday.

Missed you in Belgium CA – but we had a good day. Lovely little town and the people were very friendly towards us. Organisation brilliant – thank you everyone involved. However now back in blighty and find it all very depressing. And I’m not going to start blaming the players either – although you could argue that they are professionals and are paid very well to do a job. But is it any surprise given the amount of changes in playing and coaching professionals. CR sounded completely lost last night (when he ranted about every formation he has tried you realised he hasn’t a clue how to solve this), and if he feels lost then there is no chance is there? Undoubtedly we have players who should be able to compete at this level but to expect them all magically to be able to play well together and to expect any manager to cope with the level of interference he gets is unfair. I don’t feel overly sorry for him because if he didn’t realise what he was coming to then he is stupid. And that’s the problem – I don’t feel anything for him. I didn’t care about the result yesterday and the thought of going to any more games this season fills me with dread. But hey – the truth is that I don’t have to do I? So, like the 4000 before me, cheerio until this man sells up and goes. Sacking people (her ladyship) will make no difference and will be no victory – it comes from the top.
Of course, this is all bravado because I’ve already got tickets for Tuesday – will I take them back and get my money back? Dear God this is just like a drug addict. Forget the protest groups I think we should have more support groups – HI my name is LP and I’m a Charlton fan …. (Off to have a good cry now – still coming down from yesterday).

    • LP – the club whether that is RD, KM, RM, KR or the players does not deserve people like you. I just hope you will hang around to after they have all gone. Our club not theirs.

Tail spinning out of control, every time you think we’ve hit rock bottom, there’s a whole new level of embarrassing failure to explore

    March 5, 2017
    • This is it Simon. I was talking to a fan yesterday before the game who incidentally doesn’t agree with the protests but I reminded him that we are in the lowest league position at this stage of the season for 111 years.

His response – but eventually we will level out and start back on the up that is football.

Me – there is plenty of room below us just ask Portsmouth and Luton fans

One day- and I know I’m falling into the trap of giving ill deserved attention to an illiterate, one idea driven WUM, perhaps a2c would be so kind as to explain what Roland and Kate have succeeded with so far.
He/She is all mockney bollocks, laying it on thick about other people and how they aren’t quite of the solid character a CAFC ‘should’ be -but beyond a few ham fisted bashes at random letters on the keyboard, there’s never any insight into what’s supposedly going so well at the club.
      Just wondering.

Terry ourn went dahn with other owners n charge like Murray n Varney but theirn never get the same abuse as Queen Kat n Roland so I reckon iss cos there foreign. Kevin Nugent was doin so well but juss like Robinson iss a shame e as gettin abuse n all but sums up wot them type of exenophobe vermin fans are all abahrt, abuse the staff, shout ahrt foul n offensive insults, unurl abusive banners n then destroy any confidence the players ave dahn n away from our gaff.

    • a2c, CAFC is in a state of chaos in the hands of an owner who is reviled by all the clubs that he owns, if you don’t believe me then ask our brothers and sisters who support Standard liege and St Truiden -mostly his fellow Belgians. He is reviled not on grounds of his race but because he is ruining peoples football clubs and it is not acceptable. .
