Charlton Athletic 1 Sunderland 1

I thought before the game with our injuries that I’d take a draw. I was even more certain after half hour as we were hanging on and behind to a 2nd minute goal. Sunderland had chances to bury us in that first 30 minutes, but by the half-time whistle the worm had started to turn and we finally started to get our act together.

2nd half was a diffent game. We were excellent and it was the Black Cats that were hanging on and riding their luck. Taylor deserved the rub of the green that saw his cross turned in for an own-goal equalizer. He was excellent again.

Sunderland had chances in the first half after they scored, but probably not as good as Darren Pratley’s header and especially Karlan Grant’s chance when it was easier to score. Although Whatmore did have a very good chance for Sunderland in injury time.

Bowyer flattened the formation at half-time, did away with the diamond that Sunderland exploited so well, especially down our right and clearly Bow gave them a bit of Fergie hairdryer treatment as well.

We showed what a good side we are in the 2nd half. This with an injury list as long as your arm. In fact it was a cracking game and a great advert for League One played in front of a noisy and busy Valley, which must have been great to be a part of.

Anfernee Dijksteel was having all kinds of problems in the 1st half, but was vastly improved in the 2nd, which is a credit to his ability. Albie Morgan was excellent and was replaced by debutant Jonny Williams. Fosu was busy, Bauer was solid, although most praise was heaped on Naby Sarr, who does own a lovely range of passing. The once maligned Frenchman is much improved, and gaining in popularity.

Our first draw since October, and keeps us tucked in nicely. We need to just hang in there during January as we await key players to return.

Addicks at The Valley: Doctor Kish;
Bow: “It’s what people want to see. The owner wants to sell. It is going to happen, we just don’t know when. I keep hearing rumours but I don’t think will happen Monday or Tuesday or I’d like to think I’d heard something.”
Elsewhere: Rochdale have now let in 13 goals in 3 games. Burton the latest to hand out a thrashing winning 4-0 at Spotland. In the other game Coventry were stopped in their tracks after three consecutive wins. Scunthorpe beat the Sky Blues 2-1.

Yes indeed well done CAFC in fighting back after a real shocking opener and shame could not get the 3 points in a much better 2nd half.
Nevertheless had we lost we would have been a whopping 7 points behind the Black Cats and yes they have 2 games in hand but only one of Luton now.
IMHO I think 2nd spot is up for grabs and yes as stated before next week Sunderland v Luton but CAFC have to concentrate on just themselves.
Yes, as one does read all the match and media reports this morning and concerned about Bows comments in the London New (SLP) in that IF there was an imminent T/O he would have been advised.
Unfortunately, football and life does not work like this at all.
Yes very worrying and a still a big IF this is going to happen and surely not If New Owners want their own men in.
We all await but nothing surprises me any more.
Not related but Chelski’s Sarr was not informed that this new super star from USA was signe though he was asked his opinion several weeks ago.
Football very very strange and have a horrible gut feeling that somehow at the last moment the parties involved will pull out, but obviously I hope not.
We all await and yes Jim White stating it may happen on Monday or Tuesday next week, but he forgot Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, just yet another week of this fiasco and too many false dawns and so many lies.
We all await but don’t hold your breath for too long as it is not good for your health but supporting CAFc for nearly 6 decades never has been LOL
    Everything crossed folks.

Williams looked rusty but you could see that he will be an asset when he has settled in. It was a shame that he replaced Morgan who I thought was outstanding for an 18yr old. He wasn’t phased by playing in such an important match. Bowyer had obviously planned the substitution beforehand, which was a shame as Morgan was playing so well. He should have had a rethink and replaced Fosu whose performance was erratic. Welcome Williams but hopefully not at the expense of Morgan.

    • Credit to Morgan. He has played less 1st team games, i.e. no loans either (I believe) than his peers but looks more prepared. That was a big pressure game yesterday, big noisy partisan crowd and it sounded as if he really shone. Harder still when you are a ball playing centre midfielder, and not say a left back. Great to see.

Yep, that was how I saw the match. I suppose a draw was a fair result but it was a genuine game of two halves. I heard a few people mention “two points dropped” as I was leaving which I took as a good sign. The team is playing well and looks up for it even with 8/9 players injured and we weren’t cowed by the Mackems. There were plenty of positives – Morgan (my MotM), Williams slotted in well and has that extra nano-second that decent players have on the ball and the much maligned Sarr looked solid. After a poor start we got better and i can’t remember a really good chance for Sunderland after that. Williams looks a good bit of business – we have lost Ward back to Forest and have several injuries to other key midfielders so we needed to get some genuine experience and ability in and we found it. Credit to Williams also for signing for us – I imagine that he has taken a decent cut in wages to move from the prem to L1 and has taken a risk with a short-term contract, I hope it pays off for him.
