Pre-season in Ireland

It’s looking like fun and a lot of hard work out in Ireland for the first week of Addicks’ pre-season training as Karl Robinson gets a chance to build up his squad’s fitness, all important team spirit and resolve.

Robinson’s much parroted style of play demands high tempo and pressing and possibly the players weren’t nearly as fit enough when he took the reigns from Russell Slade. Remember last summer under the auspices of Katrien Meire there was no pre-season planned, or friendlies organized. Robinson gets the opportunity with Lee Bowyer, Johnnie Jackson and the fitness staff to build his own pre-season plan which hopefully will see us get off to a flyer.

The players though are hardly slumming it, that is a beautiful part of the world out their just north east of Dublin on the coast, with golf aplenty. I’m enjoying the coverage though. It’s more than probable that the club’s communications under Tom Rubashow are trying very hard to paint a more cohesive picture for fans, and this can sometimes be disingenuous, and understandably they want to show off the new OS platform and encourage more Valley Pass sales.

However, it think Olly Groome and others have got this just right, and the reporting does have a bit of ‘old Charlton’ feel about it from when Matt Wright was in charge. I’m looking forward to more, oh and news that Ricky Holmes has signed a new contract!

I’m unsure as to why the players all come home before going back out next week to play two games in Dublin sandwiching a match on the other coast in Limerick. Perhaps to save a few euro’s for Holmes’ new contract?
