No more additions – Luzon

“This is our squad and we go with this squad.”

Guy Luzon at today’s press conference saying that the club won’t be adding any more players to the squad. Hmm, lessons don’t appeared to have been learnt and I am fearing an incredible amount of deju-vu.

No cover then for an injury prone Chris Solly, no experienced keeper, no centre-half alternatives other than the young Lennon and Sarr and no left sided midfielder options which means Luzon will also have to play someone out of position there. Luzon indicated that we can expect Conor McAleny on the left at Blackburn on Saturday. I hope the Evertonian can impress and get some goals, but the lad’s injury record is very poor.

Cristian Ceballos might end up being the answer out left but he is still out with an ankle injury. Stephen Henderson is still a way off returning as well.

Talking of investment, according to Rick Everitt Greenwich Council are set to approve Roland Duchâtelet’s plans for the Addicks training ground (photo) with the Council’s planning board accepting that the ambitious scheme is required to allow Charlton to secure Category One status giving them the very best chances to compete for and develop players for the future. This is one of the few plans Duchâtelet have been effusive with since he bought the club and he will underwrite the costs.

Finally massive kudos to the Trust for their energy and unyielding investigative hard work in helping force the London Legacy Development Corporation, which is headed by Boris Johnson, to now tell the full facts of West Ham’s sweet deal to rent the Olympic Stadium. Time to get the popcorn open….

With Cousins being first choice back up for Solly (with Reece-Cook also available); Bergdiych very able to play left midfield; and Sarr the third choice CB, we don’t really need any more bodies IMO. We have 20 pro’s, plus good youngsters (Mitov, Thomas, Holmes-Dennis, Muldoon, KAG, Kennedy, etc) and that has to be sufficient. We will probably be out of the League Cup next week, so then we would have problems getting many of our squad game time if we had those extra couple that would appear to give us better cover. better to keep close to budget now and spend later in the season as and when the need arises.

    • Thanks Pedro. I value your opinion and you make some good points. My concern is what Luzon does when he has injuries or under-performing players. Leaves little alternatives and plans other than A. Agree that padding the squad out with nobodies is pointless and gives the youngsters a chance.

I fear for Luzon though. I did warn people not to get fond of him.

let’s face it, there are at least 6 clubs with stronger squads than us in the Championship and our squad is nothing like the promotion winning squads of 1998 and 2000. We’re not going up this year, so there’s not really much point in strengthening it unless we end up near the bottom of the table. If we still had Gomez, Poyet and Kermorgant…now that might be a different story, but for now I imagine that Luzon is under orders to try out the youngsters rather than bring in new players.
