Cousins signs up

Great news this morning as Jordan Cousins joined JBG in signing a new 4-year contract. Early in the summer most Addicks’ feared that we would lose Cousins, Gudmundsson, Gomez and Vetokele but as we approach the last week of pre-season only Joe Gomez was sold, and already he has shown Liverpool just how much he is capable of, underlining how hard it would have been for Charlton to have kept him.

It is vital that we continue to have a backbone of players that know the club and all it stands for, and in Cousins we have a future captain who could go on to make 200 appearance for the club. A number that Johnnie Jackson is two short of, and we have to go back to Matt Holland to witness the last player to acheive this not unrealistic feat.

Cousins, Solly and Jackson’s experience and conviction of where the club is heading is worth points on their own as they help build teamwork and belief amongst the mostly young and foreign squad. I think, as was pointed out to me in my comments, that the 34-year World Cup finalist Alou Diarra will also be invaluable, especially with the French speakers and Luzon’s signing of him to another year could prove to be a, perhaps unseen, masterpeice.

We are still three players short I think, but I understand that Luzon is really hoping to add two more players before QPR. Then in Reza, who made the journey to Bolton, if his head is right, then we can add another striker to the squad, which currently looks like the below. I have added in brackets the number of Charlton appearances (incl subs), to illustrate how inexperienced, still, this 2015/16 squad is.

GK – Henderson (inj, 32 apps), Pope (8), Mitov (0)
RB – Solly (169)
LB – Fox (30), Wiggins (inj, 127), Bergdich (0), Holmes-Dennis (0)
CB – Bauer (0), Lennon (3), Sarr (0)
CM – Jackson (198), Cousins (94), Ba (0), Diarra (12), Kashi (0), Moussa (inj, 16), Ceballos (0)
LM – Harriott (72)
RM – Gudmundsson (44)
CF – Vetokele (inj, 43), Watt (22), Makienok (0), Pigott (16), Ahearne-Grant (6), Ghoochanneijhad (17)

I haven’t included Nego and Bikey as I don’t expect them to be part of Luzon’s plans.

  1. As an extra thought. There are a few players in that squad that have some versatility. Not as many as Curbs or Powell would like but Luzon comes across as someone that wants to put square pegs in square holes. Unlike Peeters of course….

Diarra can play CB, and I think Luzon may have already marked him down there as he has considerably more CM options.

Bergdich can play LM and LB, Ceballos and even Harriott can play up front with KAG being useful out wide with his extra pace.
