First summer signing

Charlton have completed the signing of Patrick Bauer from C.S. Maritimo for an undisclosed fee, the club confirmed on Monday evening. (more)

Good news. The German 6ft 4in centre-back has played 43 first team games for Portuguese Primeira Liga over-achievers Maritimo on the island of Madeira, which should allow him to acclimatise to Woolwich Dockyard just nicely. Bauer played for Maritimo for two seasons after signing from childhood club VfB Stuttgart, who by all accounts were attempting to re-sign the 22-year old.

I obviously have no idea how good he is, and Maritimo might sound a bit sexy but they only average around 3,000 at home, but German’s tend to settle well into the English game and I’m looking forward to seeing him.

Just as important was Katrien Meire’s comments following the arrival of Bauer. She said “We understand that after reluctantly losing one of our young academy talents, the fans expect us to invest back into the team. I expect him (Bauer) to be the first of many new faces this summer as we look to build for the future.”

Encouraging and absolutely necessary words from Katrien indeed, given the need for aggressive and dedicated action to take Charlton forward. Has everybody submitted their wagers against Charlton being relegation fodder? I have no clue how the otherwise generally astute bookies can make that call when absolutely bugger-all has taken place on player displacement or replacement, other than young Joe off to Liverpool, which is no surprise whatsoever.
