The 2014 Shower Gellies™
I don’t think my annual Chicago Addick Shower Gellies™ was on the agenda at the Woolwich Grand Theatre or the VIP Q&A this past week, which was disappointing especially as Katrien Meire had offered up one of her minions to present the awards, but for many this is all they are talking about.
There is no red carpet and no long and platitudinous speeches, but there will be awards, the much sought after Gellies™,
sadly incredibly in it’s 9th year!
Since this time last year I have put my head down in 25 hotels, and I am happy to report that I showered in all of them. There are many things to get annoyed about when staying in hotels – hard beds, lumpy pillows, thin walls, the cost of WiFi, the long list of taxes and fees upon check out, paying through the nose for bottles of water and mini bar items, but the thing that gets my goat every time is the utter lack of shower gel.
Who takes their own shower gel to hotels these days? If you can smuggle it through security, you then have to hope it hasn’t made your pants all bubbly when you unpack. Yet so often hotels rarely have decent shower gel, and if they do, it’s just enough to wash one armpit.
The latest trend is to have one vial that serves as shampoo, conditioner, soap and shower gel. Once empty they expect you take it down the hall to get your ice cube from one of those clunky machines, that will eventually melt to give you a bed time drink!
Anyway, apologies, back to the script.
In my world, and regular readers will know this, I love a hotel, but for all the soft sheets, wrap around balconies, LCD flat screen televisions, Bluetooth docking stations and fluffy bathrobes, hotels distinguish themselves by the quantity and quality of their shower gel. Yes, I have a problem, I know.
Anyway, the man in front of me is trying to get to the ads, so drum roll please…. here are the winners of the 2014 Chicago Addick Shower Gellies™:
The ‘Shower Gel Heaven’ Award Winner is: Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa, Florida
Just back from here, and the shower gel and bathroom condiments were very impressive. Ambrosial, foamy and plenty of it.

The ‘You Charge How Much a Night, and This Is It’ Award Winner is: The St Regis, Atlanta
A gorgeous hotel but so unbelievably tight with their supply of shower gel. After asking for more didn’t get me anywhere, I had to steal some extra. If that wasn’t enough the gel was that prickly body scrub hogwash!

The ‘Showering In Fresh Air’ Award goes to: Hilton Doubletree, Los Angeles
Absolutely nothing, nothing at all. Just some towels and water. This after I had travelled all day and the airline had lost my luggage. Scarred for life!
