Trust calls for fan’s public meeting

Following the rapidly worsening relationship and the continuing lack of any fan engagement by owner Roland Duchatelet and CEO Katrien Meire, the Charlton Athletic Supporters Trust (CAST) have this evening issued the following statement:

“Further to the Charlton Athletic Supporters Trust (CAST) statement of 14th January 2015, the CAST wrote to the club’s CEO Katrien Meire to follow up our offer to discuss the growing anxiety of supporters about the direction of the club, and how they might be better involved.

We have received a disappointing response. Whilst Ms Meire has suggested that we meet with a colleague to discuss what the club needs to do to maintain and grow the fanbase, she declined any dialogue on the vital matter of where the club is heading.

Her explanation – that she had nothing more to tell supporters regarding the direction of the club – reminds us of her words in the London Evening Standard, when she insisted that fans would just “need to accept” the owner’s way. We respectfully but strongly disagree with her. We continue to hear daily from supporters of a growing discontent at the inconsistency between the club’s words and actions, and a frustration with a lack of true engagement.

The Supporters’ Trust’s offer to meet with Ms Meire remains open, but with regret we conclude that the time has now come to seek other channels by which the supporters’ voice can be heard regarding the damage being done to our historic club and its identity.

Therefore, we intend to:

– Organise and chair an open public meeting within the next two weeks, for all Charlton supporters to air their views on the current situation. This meeting is intended to be an opportunity to bring together as many as possible of the various organisational, internet and publication elements of the Charlton family, as well as individual supporters, and secure the widest possible mandate for any approach we jointly decide to adopt. We will also seek input via the Trust website from those who cannot attend the meeting.

– Based on conclusions from the meeting, agree a unified and appropriate supporters’ response at the earliest opportunity

History tells us the club is at its strongest when its supporters are informed, consulted and involved in the setting of its direction. We are committed to persuading the board of that fact and restoring the supporter to the heart of Charlton Athletic.

We will provide further details as soon as possible.”

This is exactly what CAST should be doing and it makes me proud to be a member. You can join the Charlton Athletic Supporters Trust here.

    Well said.
Please send in your comments, I am sure the supporters will welcome your opinion.
As I said, if you come to London, I will buy you a drink or two in the Kings head.
    Thanks for your support.

One wonders what Richard Murray has to say about what’s happening? What is his role within the club?

There are constant references all over the various Charlton blogs to “the board.” Just who populates the board? I am assuming Roland, Katrien and Richard are members, but who else?

  4. Ive been outspoken about our new owner for a while now, and agreed with most of Daves various comments in his blog – Drinking During The Game, I will back any peaceful stance against the new owners, who, in my opinion have sold the soul from our club.

I do question 1 thing though C.A, and that is why are3 the trust asking to talk to Ms Meire?, after the shambles of the so called selection of new Coach, I doubt very much she could make any decision regarding supporters, Roland is the one we should be asking to meet with the Trust.

    • If RD would give any supporters more than a fabricated video clip, then I am sure they would, but Katrien is the first point of contact, the company CEO and has publicly backed the Trust previously. She has also previously been keen to engage fans and be one of us, a “Charlton fan.”

She doesn’t even know the half of it does she Texas?

      • I would agree with u C.A. to a point, but the Lady was blown out of the water on any comments she made over the Head Coach issue, she must of been embarrassed to say the least, all things being equal going to her first would be the right thing to do, but I would not want to see her embarrassed again, which is very likely.

        • If she is a bright and resourceful CEO she won’t make the same mistake twice. Frankly she embarrassed herself when she said we need to accept RD’s way and that is it. Hardly enterprising.
