Where’s the spine?

Rotherham hit four goals tonight, one for every week that we have failed to find the net in the league. If Saturday wasn’t a big game before, it is now.

Guy Luzon would have had another week to get his ideas and positivity across to the players, although yet he has no additional players to work with.

Milos Veljkovic impressed at Wolves with a confident performance but the young Serb just adds to the ranks of holding midfielders. For so long we have lacked that midfield creativity and the club have only until Monday to address that.

Tony Watt has to start for me, but our need for a target man must be even more apparent as Luzon prefers a more direct style. Luzon may well desire some width as well, I know I do.

The only rumour surrounding the Addicks that appears to hold any weight is the potential loan signing of 19-year old Sporting Lisbon central defender Mouhamadou-Naby Sarr (photo).

The 21-year old may be good, he may well not be, but if he is to replace Tal Ben Haim, or even if he is not, how is he able to improve the spine of a struggling Championship team?

A year ago our spine was Hamer, Morrison, Jackson and Kermorgant, is Dmitrovic, Sarr, Veljkovic and Vetokele progress?

Millwall have brought in some good experience this window. I’m worried and still seeing no evidence of Duchâtelet understanding the demands and competitiveness of The Championship.

And hearing Bent scored two tonight makes it no better. His car would have found its own way to the Valley

Spot on CA. The ‘spine issue’ has been a theme of mine as a decent team has leaders in each area. Those leaders really cannot be loan players, for obvious reasons, however good they are. I’m led to conclude that there’s a lack of understanding/appreciation of the qualities that result in a team playing better than the sum of its parts, perhaps because the intangibles don’t show up in the individual’s stats.
