Norwich City 0 Charlton Athletic 1

A monster result tonight against the league leaders’ expensively assembled squad and the division’s top scorers.

It may have been a smash and grab victory, but they don’t come without defensive mettle, strength of character, organisation and a game plan. Oh, and winner, and Johnnie Jackson is a born winner. Those less appreciative of what Jacko gives to the fabric of our club can go back into their cubby-holes for a little bit longer.

Big Bob should be very proud of his work tonight. He went unperturbed with Gomez again, changed his preferred formation to 4-5-1 and put two 17-year olds on the bench. Then when the heat was turned up to the max, he threw on Karlan Ahearne-Grant for his debut and the ever reposeful Morgan Fox.

It was the most noticeable result of Bob’s time at Charlton, and with October here tomorrow we should be allowed to wallow, just for a moment, at what we have witnessed so far. Talking of which, those that saw for themselves the famous Jacko knee-slide at Carrow Road, can wallow a little longer.

Around the League: Forest left Wigan with a point, Watford are level with Norwich on points after beating Brentford 2-1 and Blackpool grabbed a very excellent point at Middlesbrough. Wednesday and Ipswich drew 1-1 whilst Derby scored two late goals to defeat 10-man Bournemouth.

This game was broadcast live on Radio 5 Sports Extra, so it was great fun to hear the partisan Norwich commentary team choking on their cocoa as the expected second half Norwich goal-fest failed to materialise and we stole the 3 points at the death. We were certainly under the cosh for much of the game, though it sounded like the defence was tight, with some heroic clearances, and the goal really deflated Norwich who didn’t threaten as the agonising 5 added minutes took an eternity to tick away. Great stuff, now we need to sort out getting the ball to Igor so he can add to his tally!

One of the classic experiences CA that you know so well. I was sitting on the tarmac at JFK frantically refreshing my phone as the last 10 minutes played out, praying for the plane not to take off for once – texting my son in DC who was on the edge of his seat, while my nephew who is a season ticket holder at Carrow Road was going through paroxysms. Quite a fun Tuesday afternoon! Fantastic result.

  3. Love it. I bet between us and other expat Addicks we could write a book on experiences of attempting to find out score updates and results.

I spend a fair bit of time in the Amazon jungle and that’s the only place I have found it impossible.
