“Ex-KV Mechelen assistant head coach Patrick van Houdt who resigned his position yesterday is expected to become assistant to Peeters at The Valley. Guy Kiala, who assisted Peeters at Beveren is also expected to come.” – Chicago Addick, May 23rd.
What took them so long? The OS announced today that van Houdt and Kiala (photo) will join the club’s coaching staff effective July 1st. We can only hope they have some players to coach.
Damian Matthew will be Peeters first team coach, Ben Roberts continues as goalkeeping coach and Laurence Bloom as head of sports science.
Kiala, 45, was at Waasland-Beveren with Peeters but only for a short time and by the sound of it will work under Brett Shaw at The Valley. Kiala was a defender during an undistinguished playing career.
van Houdt is married to Peeters sister, so expect some cozy foursomes in the Blackheath on hopefully happy Saturday nights. The last time family worked in coaching at Charlton was the Dowie brothers! Gulp.
47-year old van Houdt has been given a joint role of supporting both Jason Euell and Peeters with the developmental squad and the 1st team and gave up his assistant manager’s job at KV Mechelen a while back.
I do like the fact that Duchatelet has kept faith in many of the original coaches, as changing the whole staff as many clubs do when a new manager joins is such an upheaval. Having Euell, Matthew, Bloom and Roberts around does keep some good continuity and importantly people who understand the values of the club.
