11 players released

Despite being without a head coach/manager or assistant manager Charlton announced the list of players that won’t be offered new contracts this morning. They were:

Ade Azeez
Jordan Cook
Leon Cort
Cedric Evina
Kevin Feely
Mark Gower
Danny Green
Danny Hollands
Bradley Jordan
Bradley Pritchard

It’s always a sad day when players are basically told that they are no longer wanted, but many of the squad leave the club with a memorable League Champions medal and they will all move on with my very best wishes, particularly those that each played a big role in our re-emergence from the depths of League One.

Hollands, Green, Evina, Cort and Pritchard will all do a great job for an ambitious League One club. Azeez, Jordan and Feely each finished the season out on loan whereas Mark Gower struggled with injuries and fitness and at 35, it may the end of the road for the him after over 400 career games.

Jordan Cook in two seasons only started two league games and I hope that he can get his career kick started elsewhere. The club had already announced Andy Hughes intentions of moving on.

That leaves Michael Morrison, Ben Hamer, Diego Poyet, Dorian Dervite and young Oliver Muldoon I believe. Richard Wood triggered a years extension and 20-year defender Harry Osborne signed a one-year deal.

If you add the loanees – Sordell, Ajdarevic, Petrucci, Thuram and Obika – that is a total of 16 players that have gone. I suppose the one surprise from the released list was Kevin Feely, for no other reason that only one centre-back is left contracted to the club, and that is 19-year old Harry Lennon.

One has to hope that others, who’s contracts ran out, will have had offers for new contracts from the club, namely Morrison, Devitte and Poyet, as well as Hamer. I would certainly feel a lot brighter about next season if those actually extended their stay at the valley.

    • Malcolm – I’m assuming they are waiting for a new manager to be installed, but come June 1st those four will be free agents. I worry that Poyet especially will be unhappy with RD’s treatment of Riga.

C.A., I hear and agree with your comments, but it seems to me someone is making the choices already, what with 11 shown the door, I cant blame Hamer for leaving, going to a premier club is to good a chance to turn down.

Some of our academy lads have already signed for a year, so someone is making the choices, so many rumours flying around about head coach, no wonder everyone is so jittery, and what does need picking up is where this supposed fan/board meeting going to take place…christmas???.

  3. What is happening at charlton for christ sake. RIGA not even in the frame for head coach despite doing a good job and the team playing the best football for years. And now this a mass clearout without any input from someone with any knowledge of football.JUST a very rich man playing with peoples lives and livlyhoods.
