Poyet voted Player of the Year
Despite playing only 20 games and making his debut in January, the 19-year old born in Zaragoza was tonight named Charlton supporter’s 2013/14 Player of the Year.
Lawrie Wilson, who got my vote, was 2nd and Michael Morrison 3rd. Jordan Cousins, a year older than Poyet, won the Young Player of the Year. Cousins made his debut back in August and the two awards are testimony to the latest current crop of outstanding Academy players.
Poyet is the youngest ever player to win Charlton’s Player of the Year. Richie Bowman was 20 and Chris Solly 21, when they were won it in 1975 and 2012 respectively. Without doing the research I would wager no player has won previously playing as few a games as Diego.
It’s been a good week for the Poyet family, I hope now that Diego makes the decision best for his burgeoning career and give himself the best chances of retaining his Player of the Year trophy by signing a new contract at The Valley.
It is beyond doubt that Diego is going to have a sparkling career in the game, but let us enjoy each other for a little longer yet.
News also tonight that Danny Green has left the club.
