Sheffield Wednesday 2 Charlton Athletic 3
“I have a mission to be able to save Charlton.”
That was an incredible turnaround and absolutely ‘massive’ 3 points today and celebrations rang out amongst Addicks as loud as the last Monday fixture at Hillsborough.
To cap it all, three goals from the unlikeliest of sources. Marvin Sordell has frustrated and angered almost every Addick at various times this season, primarily I would hazard a guess, because he has performances like today in his locker. Whether he has one eye on being a free agent in a few weeks time, or he was given better service, or it was just one of those days, I know not, but personally I think he owed us that.
When I was toying with my 4-6-0 formation yesterday I picked Harriott because of his undoubted pace, but I am really pleased that he put in a top display today and assisted Sordell with two goals. Hillsborough must bring out the best in Callum, and I hope that gives him the confidence to take his game to the next level, especially at The Valley.
As Riga pointed out, today’s victory was truly made in Charlton. Five of the starters began their footballing lives in the Academy. A sixth, Lawrie Wilson came on as sub. Morgan Fox by all accounts had another strong game, and Solly was excellent on the other side.
The Barnsley result still grates, more so tonight, but today’s victory not only gives us every opportunity but it has given us a renewable spirit and energy to go again into the final fortnight.
Credit too to José Riga. Not many Addicks would have been pleased with his line-up, and he must have been as astounded as the rest of us after 8 minutes. He had Astrit ready to come on before the half-hour mark, but saw that the game was swinging our way and left it. You can tell that he is not just here for the ride, but he is on that roller-coaster with us.
It is always comforting to know that whoever the manager/head coach and owner of our dear football club the excruiting pain that they put you through never changes and I wouldn’t have it any other way!
